Biography

Dr. Schmieman is currently serving as the Safety Assurance Manager for the Shelter Implementation Plan Project Management Unit. He led the Battelle effort to design a new safe confinement to cover the damaged Chernobyl reactor in Ukraine. A consortium of Battelle, Bechtel, and Electricité de France designed the confinement building, a unique arch structure of enormous size that will be constructed in a remote low-dose location and then slid over the destroyed Unit-4 reactor. The new building is outfitted with cranes and robotics to enable deconstruction of the Object Shelter. Battelle’s role focused on licensing, safety analyses and environmental impact assessment. In addition to project technical management, Dr. Schmieman represented the consortium in negotiations with the government of Ukraine and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He was actively involved in approval of the design by Ukrainian regulatory authorities and the Cabinet of Ministers.
